We are coordinating cataract operations weekly in Mali in our partner clinic,
which has a capacity of treating 30 patients per day.
Our goal is to complete 1111 CATARACT SURGERIES by the end of the year.
A cataract, which can occur in either or both eyes, is the clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Cataracts are fairly common for older people, but hot weather, malnutrition and climate conditions in Africa cause many people to lose their sight to cataracts at a young age.
It is estimated that two million Africans experience vision problems stemming from cataracts. An insufficient number of doctors as well as a lack of financial resources translate to thousands with cataracts living in darkness despite the availability of a cure.
Embrace Relief’s cataract surgery project is aimed to provide relief to thousands of people suffering from cataracts in Africa.
Present a gift to your friends and family, by making a donation in their name to our cataract surgery program. We will send them a certificate notifying them of the donation. We will e-mail an electronic copy of the certificate in 5 days, and mail the original certificate within 2 weeks.
The cost of one cataract surgery is $100.
What is a cataract?
Is when a clouding in the lens occurs. This clouding enables the victim from seeing clearly, to the point where they go blind. It can’t spread from one person to another or from one to the other one. It can occur in one or two eyes.
How does the clouding of the lens effect your eyesight?
Your lens allows you eye to capture the images and sends them to your brain in which you receive it. When it is blocked the images the lens sees isn’t sent to your brain properly. It is scattered all around causing you to not see anything at all, to see disordered colors and shapes, or only some parts of the image.
What causes a cataract to form?
Protein in the lens could slowly clutter together which leads to the clouding in the lens. Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Diabetes, when your blood sugar levels are above normal. Genetics. Can be born with it. A disease inside your eye can tiger a cataract. Long time use of steroid medications
What age groups are most likely to get affected?
Usually, people during their late middle ages, 40 to 50 start experiencing symptoms of a forming cataract. However it is more clearly understood as time passes, mostly ages around 60 to 70 have a fully formed cataract. However age isn’t that big of an importance, children also have the ability to develop a cataract, even though it isn’t as high as someone in their 60’s, it is possible.
Cloudy or blurry vision. Colors are faded. Excessive glares. Objects that give off light like, lamps, headlights, sunlight, and etc. may be very bright. Poor night vision. Double vision in one eye, however, this symptom can go away as the cataract becomes larger. Frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Surgery is always the best way to get rid of it fully. The surgery doesn’t involve much pain, it is a quick operation and isn’t as scary as it may sound. It is one of the quickest and almost painless operations out there.
A small opening is made in the eye and either with laser or sound waves the cataract scatters apart to small pieces, then it is suctioned out. After the cataract is fully taken off they put an IOL, which is a mechanical lens.
You usually can go home right after you have had the surgery, however, you should be at rest for a week. If will take a while for you to get used to the IOL, since it is clear you have the ability to see colors brighter and more vividly. It will take 6 to 9 months to fully settle down.
It is an easy treatment and involves very little pain.
