The floods were caused by an abrupt onset of unseasonably warm weather, which melted vast amounts of snow. This snowmelt then overwhelmed the banks of several major rivers of northern and western Kazakhstan, including the Ural, inundated the surrounding regions of the country with dangerously high flood waters. At least several people have died, thousands of homes and businesses have been flooded, and many thousands more have evacuated their homes following what Kazakhstan’s president called “a disaster of national scale.”
For the thousands of Kazakh people who have lost their homes and livelihoods in this flooding, the recovery process will be long and difficult. And it is only just beginning. For now, many of our friends in Kazakhstan will rely on the generosity of people like you to receive basic necessities like food and water.
