Urgent calls for aid continue to be heard from the people of Libya after the catastrophic flooding that stands as one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent memory.
The floods were caused by the bursting of two dams near the city of Derna, on the northeastern Libyan coast, following unprecedented levels of rainfall. Floodwaters as high as 60 feet inundated the city, destroying entire neighborhoods and wiping out buildings, vehicles, roads, and other infrastructure. As of Sept. 16, UN estimates say that more than 11,000 people have died, and another 10,000 people remain missing. Many tens of thousands more people have lost their homes and livelihoods in this unimaginable tragedy.
The people of Libya need the support of the world as they begin a long, painful rebuilding process. Right now, many thousands of victims of this flood need basic necessities like food, water and shelter just to survive. This emergency has prompted Embrace Relief to create a Libya Flood Relief Fund.
