Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is a mandatory act of charity or almsgiving for all Muslim adults of sound mind who have the means to afford it. Zakat is not merely an act of charity: it represents the obligation for all Muslims to show solidarity with their fellow man, and to share our blessings and resources with the poorest and most disadvantaged among us.
Adult Muslims of sound mind, who possess wealth or assets above a certain threshold (Nisab) for a full lunar year, are required to pay Zakat. This includes individuals who have savings, gold, silver, investments, business inventory, or any other form of wealth exceeding the Nisab.
Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth or assets one must possess for a full lunar year before being obligated to pay Zakat. Adults owning cash, income, assets, or livestock exceeding the cash value of 85 grams of gold during a full lunar year are required to pay Zakat.
If your personal wealth has exceeded the Nisab threshold during the entire past lunar year – according to December 2023 conversion rates, the Nisab threshold is approximately $5,500 – you are obligated to give 2.5% of your wealth to those less fortunate. You can use the Zakat calculator on this page to determine how much your obligation is.
Zakat is primarily intended to support specific categories of people in need, as mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60). Recipients include the poor, needy, those in debt, wayfarers (travelers in need), and people and organizations who collect, manage and distribute Zakat funds.

You cannot describe it, when you see a little girl and boy in the morning coming to the bakery, and they are so happy. So many children go to school without breakfast. They get their bread, most children go to school without breakfast. But now they can get their bread in the morning and focus on their studies.

What is Sadaqah
Sadaqah is the act of voluntarily giving charity to others, without expecting a return. Though it is distinct from zakat (charitable giving which is mandatory for all Muslims), sadaqah can make an equally important contribution to the health and well-being of our communities.
Sadaqah can be given through good deeds and good words. But you can also donate your sadaqah to Embrace Relief's International Hunger Relief program, providing critical food packages to people living with hunger around the world. Use the donation box above to make a true impact on the lives of people in need today.
What is Fidya
If you do not fast during a day of Ramadan, Islamic practice requires you to make those days up following the end of Ramadan. If you are physically unable to fast during or immediately following Ramadan because of a health condition, old age, or another acceptable reason, you may instead pay compensation known as fidya.
If you must pay a fidya, Embrace Relief can accept your donation and ensure it goes to feed those in need as part of our International Hunger Relief program. A donation of $5 for each day of fasting missed will give families around the world the food they need to survive and thrive. Use the donation box above to make a real impact on the lives of people in need.
What is Kaffarah
If you miss a day of fasting during Ramadan without an acceptable reason – such as old age or a health condition – you owe compensation under Islamic teachings. This compensatory payment is called kaffarah, and is equal to the amount of money it would take to feed 60 people. Typically, this calculation means that if you owe kaffarah, you should donate $300 for each day of fasting during Ramadan that you have missed.
If you must pay a kaffarah, Embrace Relief will accept your donation and ensure that it is spent on nutritious food packages for families in need throughout the world. Our International Hunger Relief program will reach tens of thousands of people in nearly two dozen countries. Use the donation box above to give your kaffarah and make a real impact on peoples’ lives today.
