Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, is the night the Quran was first revealed, and the Quran calls it better than a thousand months. Its exact date is not known. Muslims look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially the 27th. In 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin around February 8, so these nights fall around February 27 to March 8, depending on moon sighting.

What is Laylat al-Qadr?

Laylat al-Qadr means the Night of Decree or Power. The Quran says: "The Night of Power is better than a thousand months" (Quran 97:3). It is the night in which the revelation of the Quran began, and believers hope to have their sins forgiven through worship in it.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever stands in prayer on the Night of Power with faith and hope for reward will have his previous sins forgiven" (Bukhari and Muslim).

When is Laylat al-Qadr in 2027?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) told us to look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan (Bukhari). Many Muslims especially look for the 27th night, but no night is certain. The table below shows the expected dates if Ramadan 2027 begins on Monday, February 8. Each Islamic night begins at sunset, so the evening shown starts the night.

What are the best deeds for the Night of Power?

  • Pray at night (qiyam), in your home or at the mosque.
  • Read and reflect on the Quran.
  • Make dua. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked what to say if she found the night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught her: "Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa'fu anni" (O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me) (Tirmidhi).
  • Make itikaf if you are able, staying at the mosque for worship in the last ten days.
  • Give in charity. A gift in these nights is a way to share the blessing of the night with people in need.

Giving on the Night of Power

Many people plan their zakat and sadaqah for the last ten nights. You can give a Ramadan food package for a family, an iftar meal for an orphaned child, or your zakat on a night you choose. A food package is $35 in Africa and $55 in the United States, Greece and Yemen, and an iftar meal for a child is $4. You can read about all of the options in Giving During Ramadan, and calculate your zakat with our Zakat Calculator.
