The useful part before the long read.

1

Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected around May 16 or 17, 2027 (moon-sighting dependent).

2

Qurbani can be offered after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah until sunset on the 12th; in some schools it extends to the 13th.

3

The Day of Arafah is expected on May 15 or 16, 2027, the day before Eid.

4

Confirm the final dates with your local mosque or Islamic center once the crescent has been sighted.

Qurbani is performed during Eid al-Adha, after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. In 2027, Eid al-Adha is expected around Sunday, May 16, or Monday, May 17, depending on when the Dhul Hijjah crescent is sighted. Because the days of Qurbani are limited, donors who give through a charity should give early enough for the sacrifice to take place on time.

Expected dates for Qurbani 2027

The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the dates depend on when the new crescent is sighted. Astronomical calculations point to the following:

If the crescent is sighted on May 6If it is sighted a day later
1 Dhul HijjahFriday, May 7Saturday, May 8
Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah)Saturday, May 15Sunday, May 16
Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah)Sunday, May 16Monday, May 17
Qurbani, 10th to 12thMay 16 to 18May 17 to 19
Qurbani, to the 13th (some schools)May 19May 20

These are expected dates, not announcements. Communities in the US often follow a local sighting or a calculated calendar, so the date can differ by a day between mosques.

Qurbani dates in recent years

YearEid al-Adha (approx., US)
2024Around June 16
2025Around June 6
2027Expected May 16 or 17

The date moves about 11 days earlier each year because the Islamic calendar is lunar. Use only the current year's date when planning your Qurbani.

The Qurbani window

  • Start: after the Eid al-Adha prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. A sacrifice offered before the prayer does not count as Qurbani.
  • End: sunset on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah. Some scholars allow the sacrifice until sunset on the 13th.

A sacrifice outside the window is not considered Qurbani. If you have missed it, please ask a scholar what applies to your situation. For the full rules, read What Is Qurbani?

Give your Qurbani on time from the USA

When you give through a charity, the sacrifice is carried out on your behalf in the days of Eid. Embrace Relief carries out sacrifices during Eid al-Adha, and the meat is delivered fresh to families and communities in need. On the Qurbani page you choose a region (Africa and Asia, Where Most Needed, or the United States), your intention and share, and the name for the sacrifice. Availability may vary by location as local arrangements are confirmed.

A sensible plan:

  1. 1
Decide where you want your Qurbani to go. See Where to Donate Qurbani in the USA.
  2. 2
Check the Qurbani page in the spring for current options.
  3. 3
Give early, well before Eid, so there is time to arrange your share.
